Why Soccer? Understanding Its Popularity and Benefits

Global Popularity

Soccer stands out as the most popular sport worldwide, with an estimated 265 million players, according to FIFA. In the United States, soccer ranks second in youth sports participation, only behind basketball, with approximately 24.5 million young players. This makes soccer not only a global phenomenon but also a major sport in the U.S.

Cost and Difficulty of Learning to Play Soccer

Starting soccer is cost-effective. Essential gear includes cleats, shin guards, and socks. Depending on whether your child joins a recreational or competitive team, costs can range from $50 to $1,500.

Soccer is relatively easy to learn. It offers ample time and space for free play and creativity, with only a few key rules like offsides that need to be understood before playing.

Physical Fitness and Injury Risks

Soccer demands high levels of endurance and agility. On average, players cover about 7 miles per game, depending on their position and level of play.

Common soccer injuries include sprains and strains, particularly of the ankles and knees. Although more severe injuries like concussions and ACL tears can occur, they are less common, especially at recreational levels.

Preventing Sports Injuries Learn About Concussions

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions from parents.

What if no one in my family knows anything about soccer?

  • Start with Rec League where coaches and referees will guide you. Summer camps and other programs are great for learning basic skills. Practicing with the ball is the best way to improve.

What are the costs?

  • Rec League costs are fixed and available on the Rec League page.
  • Classic and Select leagues are more expensive and involve additional costs for uniforms and travel.
  • Installment payment plans are available.

What is a "League"?

  • A League is a soccer organization.
  • Rec League is local, while Classic and Select leagues are regional.
  • PCYS is part of the Central Wisconsin Soccer League (CWSL) and Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association (WYSA), which set rules and guidelines.

What equipment is needed?

  • For Rec League: Shin guards, long socks, and a ball are required. Cleats are optional but recommended.
  • For other leagues: cleats and uniforms are necessary. A sports bag is also helpful.

Should my child bring a ball to practice?

  • Yes, it’s a good idea to label it with your family name. Lost balls are often found at the concession stand.

Do parents need to volunteer?

  • Yes, as an all-volunteer organization, we ask for 2 hours per family for Rec League and 10 hours for Classic/Select leagues.
  • All volunteer opportunities are posted on PlayMetrics for Classic and Select Teams, and SignUp Genius for Rec League participants
